Remco Evenepoel was top of the small pile of favourites at the elite men's ITT World Championships, but no one predicted the utter domination over Kigali's 40.6-kilometre course. He even caught key rival Tadej Pogačar 2 km from the line having started 2:30 after him, as the Slovenian fell just short of the podium.
After setting a terrific early benchmark, Ilan van Wilder held on to join his compatriot on the podium in third, and Australian Jay Vine executed his TT to perfection to split the Belgians in silver-medal position.

How it happened
- Rwanda’s own Shemu Nsengiyumva was first off the ramp, and spent about 45 minutes on the hotseat until Florian Vermeersch, the first of three Belgian starters, bettered the 26-year-old’s benchmark by 1 minute 51 seconds.
- Riding a steady pace a while later was Michael Leonard of Canada and the Ineos Grenadiers, who slashed a minute 11 seconds out of Vermeersch’s time. The 21-year Canadian didn’t get to spend long at the top though before Ilan van Wilder, the second Belgian of the day, moved the mark by another minute and change.
- Isaac Del Toro then blasted through the first time check as the fastest by nine seconds, a mark which stood every test until Remco Evenepoel – Jay Vine was two seconds slower, while Tadej Pogačar gave away less than a second to his young trade teammate, all of them faster than Van Wilder by at least nine seconds.
