It's now a couple days since the Road World Championships came to a close in the Rwandan capital of Kigali. The fans have all gone home; the marquees, barriers, and gantries have been packed away; and the world's best road cyclists are now looking towards their next goals (or maybe the off-season). But before we leave Kigali behind entirely, let's take one last look back at the first Road Worlds held in Africa.
Thankfully for us, our wonderful photographer Kristof Ramon was in Kigali throughout the championships. As you'll see in the gallery below – which features the elite individual time trials and road races – Kristoff snapped a whole slew of amazing images that capture the flavour of the event.
Let's get right into it.
Getting to Worlds is a mighty operation, especially when the event is so far from the sport's European heartland. In the elite women's time trial, some of the African riders didn't have the luxury of TT-specific equipment, including Botswana's Lobopo Kono, pictured here. There was no shortage of local fans out to watch the time trials ...... which was a great sign ahead of the final weekend's road races.Canada's Olivia Baril had some issues with her helmet visor during her time trial. They call Rwanda the "Land of a Thousand Hills", and with good reason. The time trials were very lumpy and the road races were downright brutal.
