Riding in his third Tour de France, Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) drew closer than ever before to his first career Grand Tour stage win on Thursday – but not close enough. After getting into the decisive breakaway on stage 6, the 24-year-old American settled for runner-up honors behind Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) in Vire Normandie.
Fittingly for a rider with a mustache not unlike that of Cal Naughton, Jr. from Talladega Nights, Simmons put his own spin on Ricky Bobby's iconic mantra in his post-race interview.
"Unfortunately in cycling you only remember the winners," he said.
In other words: "If you ain't first, you're last."
