Almeida vs. Vingegaard: We have a race on our hands at the Vuelta

The Alto de l'Angliru brought the GC picture into focus at the 2025 Vuelta a España, and it's suddenly a more intriguing battle than we thought.

Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) entered the 2025 Vuelta a España as the overall favorite and he only cemented that status through the first week and a half of the race, out-muscling his GC rivals at nearly every turn.

On Friday atop the Alto de l'Angliru, however, things got a bit more interesting.

João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) pulled Vingegaard for the final few kilometers of stage 13 and still had plenty in the tank to secure the victory, while Vingegaard seemed truly at his limit for the last several minutes of the race. The riders hit the line on the same official finishing time and thus Almeida's only real gain on the day was in the form of four bonus seconds – but he made a statement none the less.

We have a race on our hands.
