Three days after Israel-Premier Tech released a statement acknowledging a contract dispute with Derek Gee, the Canadian road champion has made his first public comments on the matter.
"I confirm that my contract with Israel-Premier Tech has been formally and duly terminated by my legal representatives," Gee wrote in a statement posted to social media. "This was not an easy decision, but one that I made after careful consideration and for legitimate reasons."
Without specifying exactly what those reasons might be, Gee said that "certain issues simply made my continuation at the team untenable." At the same time, he expressly denied any contact with other squads, leaving his motivation for trying to get out of his contract unclear. That will only fuel speculation – without any clearcut answers – as to whether the rift between rider and team has come about due to some internal conflict with management, political reasons, or simply financial incentives.
